Halloween is quickly approaching and we are loving all things spooky and scary! You’re probably thinking that one of the scariest things you can hear this Halloween is your chiropractor telling you to keep things healthy but at Preferred Chiropractic, we love Halloween as much as everyone else! Dressing up in silly, scary, or crazy costumes and getting free candy? Yes, please! It’s a tradition that many of us look back on with fond memories, but it’s also important to maintain balance. Holidays that are focused on treats and candy can make that a challenge.
You work hard all year to instill healthy habits in your family and you don’t want all that undone in one night. Sure – one night won’t do it, but keep in mind that the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama found that the average child will collect between 3,500 and 7,000 calories in candy while trick-or-treating. Now that really is scary! We aren’t saying you should switch out all their candy for carrots, but we do have some tricks to help your family have a healthier Halloween. Here are our tips.
Start with a Scary Good Meal
Halloween may look different this year, but if you still plan on trick-or-treating, start with a well-rounded and healthy meal. This will make it easier for the entire family to resist consuming too much candy. Include lean protein, complex carbs, and fiber so you’ll have plenty of energy as you from house to house.
Set Ghostly Goals
Halloween may be all about collecting candy, but one health benefit of trick-or-treating is that walking is good exercise. To help get the whole family more excited for the ground you’ll cover, make a Halloween-themed map and create a route showing how much ground you’ll cover. You can even download an app to track your steps so if you decide to add more neighborhoods as you go, you’ll be able to see how far you’ve walked.
Don’t Fear Your Freezer
Talk with your kids beforehand and discuss how much candy they can have on Halloween night, then take away the rest and freeze it. Fun-size candy bars are small, but they last a long longer when they are eaten frozen. This will help prevent your kids from eating too much at once.
