So, how do you know if you have it and what can you do to treat it? Here’s what you need to know about sciatic pain and how chiropractic can help.

What is Sciatica?

When people say, “sciatica,”, they are referring to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve extends from the lower back through the hips and buttocks down each leg. Sciatica usually only affects one side of the body.

Symptoms include:

  • Pain the in rear or leg that is worsened when sitting

  • Tingling or burning running down the leg

  • Weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg or foot

  • Constant pain on one side of the rear

  • Shooting pain that makes standing up difficult

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica is caused by irritation of the root(s) of the lumbosacral and the lower lumbar spine. Other common causes include

  • Spondylolisthesis, when one vertebra slips forward over another

  • Degenerative disc disease which affects the discs that cushion the vertebrae

  • Spinal stenosis, or the narrowing of the spaces within the spine

  • Pregnancy when severe strain is put on the spine

Additional causes can be high heels, sleeping on a mattress that is too soft, excess weight, and not exercising regularly.
